During the weekend, due apparently to the absence

of the "Tung On", a considerable number of Chinese passengers arrived in Canton by the Company's steamers, and we regret to say they were subjected to ill-treatment at the hands of the pickets. We reported the matter to Mr. P.M. Young who stated that the Police had been taken unaware and that there

were insufficient numbers present to deal with the pickets. He told us that more police were being detailed for duty outside the wharves and that they were being given strict instructions to prevent the mishandling of incoming passengers

We are, Dear Sir,

Yours faithfully,

(Sgd)

Agents.
